Energy targets push transmission up; comfort standards push glare down. A diffuser that scatters heavily will meet the glare requirement but cost lumens; one that is too clear will fail on comfort.
Why prismatic surfaces help
A prismatic surface redirects light where it is wanted rather than scattering it, so a fixture can meet a glare limit at a higher transmission than an equivalent frosted cover.
Retail and hospitality
Here appearance often outranks raw efficacy. Opal and frosted PMMA profiles give a soft, uniform surface; decorative projects use textured, coloured and two-colour profiles.
Specifying
State the minimum acceptable efficacy, the glare requirement, the appearance target and the mounting method. Trial lengths then confirm the choice in the real luminaire.
