Clear diffusers

A clear profile passes the most light and is chosen where efficacy is the priority or where the light source should be visible as a design element. The cost is visible LED pitch and higher glare at normal viewing angles.

Frosted diffusers

A frosted or embossed surface scatters the light, hiding the individual sources and softening glare. The cost is output: scattering sends some light back into the fixture.

The middle ground

Most projects land between the two. Options include a lightly frosted face, a frosted inner surface with a clear outer surface, or a two-colour profile that combines a diffusing face with an opaque body. Co-extrusion makes these combinations practical in a single part.

How to decide

Ask what the fixture looks like when it is off, and how close people get to it. Fixtures seen at eye level or in reflective surroundings need more diffusion; high-bay and remote-mounted fixtures can run clearer.
